What is a Web?

Web  is a concept that takes the network as a platform for information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. A Web site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators  of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them.

Website Structure
The design and development of your website's structure.

The structure of your site is composed of the different sections of your website and navigation within those sections. It is the framework that shapes your site and defines your website navigation scheme. If you develop a sound website structure everything else will fall into place.

Basic website structure

As the diagram below shows a website is composed of three main website sections:  The homepage, the main sections and the subsections.

Main sections are exactly what the term implies. These are the prime headings or categories that make-up your website. This is the logical organization of the main content areas in your website basic layouts. From here your visitor should be only one click away from the information that they are seeking.

The main sections or divisions you choose will become the main index pages of your website. After you have divided your content into main sections, determine their order of importance. What will visitors want to know about first, second, etc. ( i.e. this will also determine the structure of your navigation tree) .

Not all main sections necessarily need to have subsections, but most will require a further breakdown of information. It really depends on the amount of website content that you have on your site. When designing a new website and during website constructions, keep in mind that the content will increase as you update and add information to the site. Build in room to expand as you determine your main and sub sections.
